Before AI Grew Up

To my kids,

Today, AI feels like a curious new friend. It's fascinating, messy, and playful. It's not just another gadget or tool; it's quietly becoming part of our daily lives, changing how we do things in ways we're still discovering.

Right now, AI is both extraordinary and ordinary. We talk to Alexa or ChatGPT as naturally as we talk to other people, asking them questions or requesting our favorite songs. They're helpful enough to feel almost human, yet innocent enough to make us laugh. Their errors show us how little AI truly understands about the complexities of human life.

We're at a point where we trust AI cautiously. Self-driving cars are already on the streets (in a few places only), but humans still keep a close eye on them. AI-generated art and writing can be incredibly impressive. Yet, AI sometimes hallucinates, confidently stating things that aren't true, making it hard to know what's real and what's not. It's both amazing and a little unsettling.

We don't yet fully understand where AI will take us, but we sense it's going to be revolutionary. Every day brings something new and surprising, creating both excitement and concern about how it might shape your future. We wonder if AI will take some of our jobs or perhaps make the world so productive that we'll all work less. Some people also sees AI as the solution to the global economy problems.

Right now, everyone talks about AI, but only a few of us are truly taking it seriously and integrating it rapidly into our daily lives. Using AI today still feels a bit like cheating, but by the time you're reading this, not using it will probably seem outdated, even foolish. By then, AI will likely be everywhere, as ordinary and essential as electricity.

We're at the thrilling, uncertain beginning of something big. You're growing up alongside the world AI is shaping and someday, you'll probably smile thinking about how little I understood.

Did I get it right?
